Johns Hopkins University is the first research university in the United States and the Western Hemisphere. When Johns Hopkins, a Quaker banker in Baltimore, Maryland, died in 1873, he left a fortune worth $7 million ($1.6 billion in 2006 purchasing power). In accordance with his will, his estate was divided in half between Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Hospital, which bear his name. At the time, it was the largest charitable donation ever made in the United States. In 1875, the trustees purchased the first parcel of land on Howard Street in downtown Baltimore for a future university campus. On January 22, 1876, Johns Hopkins University was officially established.
